Money if you can't work

If you can't work, sometimes you can get money from the government. This is called Unemployment Insurance. It is not really insurance because you do NOT have to buy anything. You only have to not be working. Here is some information for immigrants (Immigrants are people from other countries):

For example, "First, they must be unemployed “through no fault of their own.” Second, they must have enough wages earned or hours worked in their “base period” to establish a claim. Third, they must be “able and available” to work."

Help with Childcare/babysitting

Learn English with USA Learns

You can learn English with USA Learns on your laptop, tablet, or phone.

-There are five classes.

Don't Lose Your Home

During the Corona virus, people who rent in San Mateo County can't lose their homes, even if they can't pay rent for now. This is called a ban on evictions. Your landlord or manager can't evict you right now, during the Corona virus.

U.S. Census

Every house in the U.S. will get mail from the United States Census. It's very important that everyone answer the questions. You can answer in many different languages online, by phone, or by mail. The U.S. Census counts every person in the U.S., not just citizens - everyone. This information is used to decide how much money goes to schools, streets, transportation, hospitals, libraries, food for children and families, and more. If you don't answer the questions, we will get less money. It is important for everyone to answer the questions.

You can get help paying rent from the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County. Call and leave a message at (650) 517 – 8939. Remember, San Mateo County includes all the cities from Daly City to Menlo Park to Half Moon Bay. It's not just the city of San Mateo.

Governor Newsom Stops People from Losing Their Homes

Governor Newsom ordered landlords not to evict renters from their homes (not to make renters leave) if they cannot pay rent during the Corona virus. Renters will need to pay later, but they cannot lose their homes right now.
